The first major battle using men who were not already in military service, that first day saw like 60k casualties with almost 20k of those KIAs. instead, they learned this war their boys had volunteered for was very real. In fact, the Somme was one of the earliest battles in WW1, and the British expected it to be a cakewalk. The deaths on both sides just kept rising. And then the battle kept on going for another five months. ![]() The first day of the Battle of the Somme is actually one of the singe most deadly days in human history. The casualties on the Somme were outrageous, and the military strategy was questionable, at best. I say The Somme, particularly given the things you mention as factors in the decision. ![]()
